Irish Furniture Flammability Rules to Be Revoked

The Irish Government has announced the revocation of the Industrial Research and Standards (Fire Safety) (Domestic Furniture) Order 1995, bringing Ireland's approach to furniture safety into line with the EU General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR).

The change forms part of a wider programme to modernise Ireland's furniture regulatory framework while maintaining requirements for products placed on the market to be safe. The GPSR, which has applied across the European Union since December 2024, establishes a common safety framework for consumer products and places legal responsibilities on manufacturers, importers and distributors.

Businesses supplying furniture to Ireland will not be required to withdraw products already being lawfully supplied to the market. Products can continue to be sold provided they comply with the GPSR and other applicable legal requirements. Enforcement authorities will retain powers to investigate potentially unsafe products, require corrective measures, order recalls and remove dangerous products from the market where necessary.
