BS 6396:2022 Electrical systems in furniture. Specification

On 28 March 2022, BSI published ‘BS 6396:2022 Electrical systems in furniture. Specification’. This is includes key updates on previous versions of the standard.

Historically the standard heavily focused on electrical systems in office and educational furniture, and incorporates requirements for the safe provision and assembly of electrical power, data and telecommunications distribution systems in office furniture, educational furniture and office screens. However it should be noted that the 2022 version now covers all types of furniture and sectors.

BSI state that “BS 6396 applies to single-phase electrical power distribution systems operating at rated voltages up to 250 V a.c. that are connected to the fixed wiring of the permanent installation of the building by a 13 A fused plug and socket-outlet arrangement conforming to BS 1363. BS 6396 makes provision for the routing of cables through the furniture.”
